What is capoeira
For some, it is a dance with music, rhythm, and acrobatic movements; for others, a sport or therapy. Originally, capoeira was created in colonial Brazil empirically by enslaved people, with the aim of fighting for their freedom and ensuring they could return home safely.
Musicality in capoeira
Initially, any instrument could be used in capoeira. Today, only a few are traditional, with the berimbau being the most characteristic, responsible for guiding the game, determining rhythm and intensity. Singing transmits knowledge and messages to all participants.
Capoeira traditions
Capoeira traditions require discipline and preserve its history, rituals, values, and cultural identity. They transmit knowledge, respect, hierarchy, and the wisdom of previous generations.
Capoeira styles
Each capoeira style expresses its own way of playing and moving. Some styles use instruments and singing, others do not, but all combine tradition, improvisation, and cultural identity, reflecting both history and the creativity of practitioners.
